DRIVEN: Is The All-new Maserati Levante Trofeo Worth Checking Out? Verdict Enclosed...
It wasn't too long ago that Maserati joined the sport-utility vehicle fray.

Alongside sporty, luxury marques like Porsche and Jaguar, the Italians added an SUV to its product portfolio. And, frankly, we can't blame them.

That's where today's buyers are. If you want it to survive and continue producing lust worthy sports cars, it's going to have to move units. So, an SUV was born.

Today it accounts for more than 50 percent of Maserati's sales, according to CAR.

But, to be honest, it seems like the Levante's time has come and gone. There was a momentary pop and it's now gone. So, Maserati rolled out a more beastly varient. Dubbed the Trofeo, it boasts a twin-turbo V8 producing about 575 horsepower and nearly 570 lb.-ft. of torque.

Is that enough to get a "W" though? See CAR's take, below and judge for yourself.

Maserati Levante Trofeo: verdict

...Either way, these V8-powered Maseratis represent a cooler, more unusual choice over the far more obvious competition. Their styling is unlike anything else, but the Trofeo and GTS’ main strengths lie with a surprisingly good drivetrain – from the V8 all the way through to the ZF ‘box and AWD system.

But there’s only so much charm and character can do when parked alongside extremely well-executed competitors from Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen. That’s when the Levante's shortcomings are most obvious.

With an all-new Levante platform on the way – with room for electrification – we’re hoping Maserati can keep the character and dynamics of the current car, but sharpen things up everywhere else for an increasingly competitive market.

Maserati should be using the Hemi and the Hellcat engines. The Tres Feo is pretty much a Maserati Magnum. The Hemi improves the Ghibli tremendously. :)

There is NOT "...an all-new Levante platform on the way..."

No about the engines Matt - Maserati is being sold in Europe as an Exotic - and having Ferrari based Engines is a definite plus.

THe problem is the Levante is a generation behind in automation - plus has a horrible record for reliability - HOWEVER - most Exotics do - but apparently the public really does not consider them as Exotics and balk at the prices.

The author seems impressed that the firm sold 55,000 Levante units since 2016. I wonder if the firm feels the same way. If they are comparing themselves to Ferrari sales figures instead of Mercedes, I think they might be missing the point.

Reality: Maserati is NOT seen as an exotic.

Reality: Maserati has been marketed since the arrival of the Ghibli and Qporte as an Italian BMW.

Reality: Everyone knows the Ghibli/Qporte/Levantate are all "rebodied Chargers" at double the price.

Reality: They sell ONLY with massive price reductions

Reality: Sales are abysmal due to poor pricing and promotion.

Reality: Reliability and quality control--though meh--are better than at Alfa Romeo.

Reality: Because of poor sales, Maserati is losing dealers.

Reality: The Levante should be selling 55K units a year in the USA.

Reality: Marchionne botched Maserati and Alfa Romeo's relaunches.

@MD- In Canada the Levante starts at $93K CAD and the Trofeo is $187k CAD. Here it is certainly being positioned as a luxury SUV with an exotic Italian flair. But if you are g0ing to spend that kind of money you are walking past a lot of easier more predictable choices.

The Levantate doesn't sell here so asking for $25K right off the top will have the dealer breathing a sigh of relief that you didn't ask for more.

So the $75K base Levantanos was heasily had for below $60K. They should have put it out at $50K base and gotten a lot of volume from it. It's just an AWD LX under it all. And aside from the idiotic meanderings of the alcoholic that kills rich people for profit, there is a history of American V8s in exotic Italian cars. Thus a Hemi Qporte/Ghibli/Levante as well as a Hellcat Qporte/Ghibli/Levante would have probably more than doubled sales. Besides the Maserati V6 is from Kokomo and driven through the Ferrari parking lot to say that Ferrari was there.

And as mentioned before, I built a Hemi Ghibli. It was largely a bolt-in job. The hood needed some reshaping, but aside from that, easy.
