DRIVEN: Is The Latest Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 One Of The BEST Performance Car Bargains?
I feel like I am beating a dead horse when it comes to the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and its sibling, the Boxster Spyder. While I haven't driven the latest variants, the previous versions are just magical autos.

That's because the mixture of balance and power just is addicting. And, better yet, you can drive it at 10/10ths every where you go.

It is exactly what an enthusiast would want.

Frankly, with the GT4 and Boxster Spyder in existence I don't see a need for a 911. Simply put, these cars drive better.

So, what's the initial feedback? I don't know if you'll be too surprised, Spies...

Verdict

The new Porsche Cayman GT4 is one of the best performance car bargains of the last decade. It contains a lot of 911 GT3 technology and know-how, is powered by a fantastic new 4.0-litre flat six engine, and to drive, it is close to perfection. And all for a mere £75 grand. Right now it is in a class of one, and it’s hard to see that changing any time soon.

Dropping the horrible 4 cylinder would be a great move across the line as would be removing "718" that is a head scratcher even among Porsche fans.

916 Cayman would be a magical name.

718 was added to give a car that had no heritage some fake credibility. Since launched the Cayman and Boxster have been trying to shake their reputation as cars for girls. Seeing a video with a GT4 that had its shock tower damaged with a huge crack in it because of a pothole, I would pass.

And when Porsche tacked 718 onto the Cayman/Boxster, dedicated Porsche fans had to google 718 because it meant nothing to them.

If they named it 718 from the very start it would make sense. But bringing it up now is a bit odd and fake.

When they named it 718, customers were confused as hell. The Porsche 914-6 (aka 916 in some markets) was a great car. I'm made several replicas. I've never met a 914 that I would not consider buying for the flip. You dismantle them, blast them down to bare metal, fix the rust. Weld in some bracing, bolt on reproduction fenders and flare the rears, bolt in the 6 and you're largely done.

718 is simply a name. Who cares - its the car that counts. And indeed - these cars drive easier than a 911.

Real Porsche fans knew what the car was - right away. It MIGHT be an effort to separate the cars for people new to Porsche. Ferrari has used LOTS of different names over the years- why is it when Porsche does it - do people get confused?

It is likely you can buy a Corvette Z06 in the same price range though - this is not a class of one.

If one can actually buy one for $100k, yes it is a bargain. But reality is they will all be loaded with options ($20k) and markups ($30k), plus tax & reg fees... $170k when all said and done... not a bargain to me anymore.
