Birkenstocks Be Damned: VW To Kill Golf Alltrack And Sportwagens At The End Of The 2019 Model Year

Volkswagen of America has announced that the Golf Alltrack and Golf SportWagen won’t be produced anymore following their 2019 model year run. Of the pair, the Alltrack will endure until December of this year when production will cease at the Puebla plant in Mexico.

The reason for their demise is the fact that SUVs account for 47% of industry sales and more than 50% of VW sales in the U.S. And more are coming too, like the Atlas Cross Sport and the ID. CROZZ electric SUV.

I really hate 90% of Americans. That might be a conservative estimate too.

I'm waiting for the Crozz, but I hope they have a better name than that when it arrives.

Nobody buys wagons in the US unless the say Subaru or are on stilts (CUV). Out of curiosity do you drive a wagon?

The ultimate wagon is the Golf R wagon, but DSG only. A manual Golf R wagon would have enticed me to break the bank.

People are really coming to realize how fragile and problematic the DSG is. The Alltrack/Sportwagen simply don't sell. They are far too expensive for what you get.

The DSG Transmission is one of if not the Best Dual Clutch on the market! I have numerous friends with 400+ HP R's and GTIs with the DSG and absolutely no issues. The Alltrack.Sportwagen have always been great buys with a ton of car for the money however VW never supported them enough and didn't market them for beans! Unfortunately at the end of the day the U.S just doesn't like wagons like other countries do. The TDI wagons sold like nobody's business and a AWD version would have been insane.

Dual Clutch Automatics have a problem that you can either live with or not. But it is inherent in the Dual Clutch - THEY do not like stop and go driving in heavy traffic - an area where a torque converter in a regular automatic fixes the problem.

To deal with the constant shifting - the Dual Clutch must "slip" the clutch to make it simulate a fluid connection (Torque Converter) and that results in a lot of Jerky, and hard shifts - something ALL Dual Clutch units do - and there is NO place to go to get away from that.

If the DSG "was" the best Dual Clutch you could get - I would NEVER buy a car with it - living in the NY Metropolitan area. I suspect people from Los Angeles complain just as much. Of course - we have NO proof the DSG is the best Dual Clutch (The one in my Ferrari is far more advanced)

Cuv's are simply Station wagons (In the case of Subaru - literally) - that have higher ground clearance - and might have four wheel drive.

Currently - the two box (Station wagon and others) is the largest selling body style on the market - even if you leave out hatchbacks.

Just tell the Americans it’s a SUV and name it... Tiguan Sport, Tiguanette, or something and it would’ve sold a lot more...

The AllTrack and Sportwagen were too small for their price. Quality also was poor for the price.

For Americans, the packaging of the Golf wagons is poor and if you have a family, its scary to regularily drive one in an area with lots of Suburbans and F150's. If your Golf Wagon hits one, you are all basically dead (or at least it looks that way from the VW driver's seat).
