WHO Will The Mid-Engined Corvette Steal Sales From?
General Motors President Mark Reuss sees the new midengine Chevrolet Corvette recasting the sports car market: The starting price below $60,000 keeps it attainable to loyalists, while its newfound capabilities — such as reaching 60 mph in three seconds or less — may attract buyers who spend lavishly on high-end imports.

"I think this car is going to change everything. I really do," Reuss said after the 2020 Corvette's global rollout in an old blimp hangar here.

At its price point, the wealthy can add it to their stable of play toys. But the wealthy won't get rid of their Ferraris, Lambos, and Porsches. The NSX and R8 are probably most in the crosshairs of the C8.

Agreed, you can add the 8 series to that, along with the i8, AMG GT, dare I say 911, GTR, Hellcats and here’s why...

The corvette isn’t some newbie coming to the market competitively price, the corvette is already an established icon in the automotive world, has it lost some of its desirability any recent generations, maybe but it’s still respected and has a cult like following, mainly of guys that look like Jay Leno

Either way the Corvette is definitely the new IT CAR and I feel like it’s stolen the Supra’s thunder and is THE CAR of the summer

Mercedes will now have their hands full developing the next gen SL which is already underway and supposedly a return to the car’s legendary roots. Should be an exciting next few quarters in car land

I think Chevy will be happy if the add it, still a sale. Perhaps would not have added it before.

Porsche 911/cayman, NSX, R8, Supra, higher end mustangs will get hit hard. This is an extreme amount of performance for the for the price, and will affect everyone selling performance vehicles. I see some effects of sales of AMG/M cars as well.

THe Kia Stinger only sold about 17,000 in 2018 with the early rush. It has already peaked and is likely to start dropping sales numbers. It is not worth mentioning here

It is not in the same league as the Corvette - not even the Camaro or Mustang.

I don't think anyone is suggesting the Stinger and Corvette are competitors. Completely different cars and price point. It is worth noting the sales of the Stinger are in line with Kia's forecast. No excess inventory. It is accomplishing what they intended.

It's a really good reason not to buy a 911, F Type, NSX, R8, GTR, AMGGT, Cayman, TT, Supra...the C8 is a lot of performance for the money. I just wish it weren't so dumpy looking.

It might steal sales from the GT500 but I doubt it because the true Mustang and Camaro fans so rarely like both. I also think the Hellcats are safe for similar reasons.

I won't steal high end sales from any euro brand. I just don't see it happening. They didn't buy C7's or the other Corvette's either. And it was not because it was front engined. And it won't matter now that it is mid engined. If you want a $300k car I don't think you will cross shop $60k cars. Time will tell but I dont think Ferrari or Porsche will be losing any sleep. They have McLaren to worry about. Every sale they have ever had should have been a Porsche Turbo, F488 or a Huracan. They hurt the other Euro brands, Corvette wont'.

The C7--when initially released--most decidedly DID steal sales away from more expensive cars because it was the latest flavor of the moment.

I know two Ferrari owners that will add it to their garage, not as a replacement, just an addition.

Those that like the IT car of the moment will buy the Vette to add to their collection - but the fact is - the CHEVY name still does not carry the Prestige of the Ferrari or Lambo or Aston - and since they will likely sell far more Vettes as well - it will not be as exclusive either.

AMericans who are looking for the best Performance for the price will Gladly stand in line as early sales will outstrip Gms ability to produce them - the real question is how long that will last.

The main reason people buy expensive things (cars, watches, art, etc) is because they can. It's about exclusivity and showing off. So I don't think makers of more expensive autos will lose sales.

Its the same how now that I can afford to wear Patek Phillipe and AP watches, I don't care about Rolexes, let alone anything cheaper than a Rolex.

All your bitchqueening (sic) snobbery aside--are you a Kardashian?--, because the C8 is the latest biggest thing, it most decidedly WILL steal sales from more expensive toys.

Well said, MD.
People who are secure without need to flaunt wealth can appreciate the engineering excellence and of course the newness.
My phone keeps excellence so I have no need for jewelry on my wrist. Of course there are doctors you can see to address your, um, shortcoming.

I gave my crew the task from hell today. They began the complete tear down of my first car--a Mustang Grande coupe--and let's just say that the rebuild is going to be a task and a half. Rust repair is going to be epic.

So, do I restore it to what the vin tag says or to what it was when I bought it?

Vin tag. It will be well worth it. Looking forward to progress reports.

@Truthy Avocado green.

So do we go with recreating the powertrain it came with? 250 Thriftpower I-6. I substituted a 351 V8 from the junk yard when I got the car.

The I6 will be really tough to do. I like the 350 V8 from a heritage and power point of view, but that makes restoring it to vin moot.
Either way I think you will make money on it.

@Truthy Mustang Grande coupes will never be collectible. They were an attempt to turn the Mustang into a personal luxury vehicle.

The I-6 will be a snap if I were to go that route. A 390 would be fun or 427 or 427.

A lot of the car will be new. The entire suspension, driveline, and brakes are getting dumped for new.

I used to have bottles of oil in the trunk because it needed a bottle of motor oil with nearly ever fill up.

It went to Rancho Palos Verdes and Palm Springs each at least once a month when I was in high school. I'd leave Friday after school and return Sunday night.

Seem obvious it'll steal from other MRs, but I think it'll further steal from FRs like BMW and Merceds or even Cadillac, particularly their small-medium size muscle cars

The SUV market! Anyone that was going to write another $60k+ check for another SUV for the family might keep the old SUV a little longer so daddy can buy a new toy.

Supra out of the box, GTR, R8, NSX. But these are low volume (in the case of the NSX, really low volume). It is important to note it comes in right hand drive so it will now sell more in those markets.

The new mid-engine Corvette is obviously geared to buyers who want performance. For the price, the Corvette represents extremely great value for the performance offered. With a starting price below $60K and a nicely optioned model in the $70K-$75K range, it will steal buyers from other brands performance models up to a certain price of around $150K.

Once you go above $150K, the buyers will likely just add the Corvette to their stable of Ferraris, Lamborghinis etc. The people looking at $150K-$200K+ aren't cross-shopping with $60K vehicles because they are after more than just pure performance.

This means the vehicles most likely to be impacted are the Porsche 911 and Cayman, Mercedes AMG GT, BMW M8, Dodge Hellcat, Audi R8 and Acura NSX.
