GM Explains How It Curbed Costs And Made The 2020 Corvette So Affordable
One of the greatest mysteries surrounding the 2020 Chevy Corvette is how, exactly, General Motors was able to keep its starting price under $60,000. The current C7 Corvette Stingray, this generation’s entry-level offering with 455 horsepower (339 kilowatts), starts at $55,900. And yet, according to GM, the C8’s starting price could be within a stone’s throw of the C7. Motor Authority, also curious about the mental mathematics needed to justify the low starting price, asked GM how it kept the price so low.

If it is basically the same as the C7 but the engine is in the back, if you are doing an all new design but are used to the $60k price point, there is no reason why it should cost more really. They could have charged more but decided not too.

Corvette needs to become a brand ASAP.

They need a base model for $40K or so and then a "Macan" and a "Cayenne".

This is an opportunity to change GM's image too.

No car in GM's stable has as much goodwill as the Corvette.

No car in GM's stable has as much goodwill to squander, as the Corvette...and it looks like it is well on its way to being squandered.

Agreed but it would be hard for GM to pull it off. Perhaps use the outgoing C7 as the basis for a sedan and even an El Corvette sedan based truck. Building the smaller Cayman brother might be more difficult as I don't know of a platform they could use to base it on. Same with the Sibling Macan/Cayenne SUVs. I also don't know of a platform they could build a high quality performance SUV on???

Nonsense - Corvette has always been the SYmbol of the Chevrolet Division - and the past has PROVEN that we don't need or want more BRANDS. In case you haven't looked - Cars are not selling well right now. The configuration of a mid engine does not lend itself to an SUV - Maybe they could turn the OLD C7 platform into that - but they have already changed the tooling.

THe fact is the price points of the Stingray are fine - and if the car manages to live up to the performance Hype - GM will sell every one they can make - noting that they have limited production capabilities. But - it will bring a lot of floor traffic into the showrooms

Anyone who thinks the New Stingray is even remotely close to a Fiero has no brains - is probably a FORD car salesman - and longs for English cars that don't exist.

Another way to amortize the cost would be to sell the chassis. Tesla could use it like they used Lotus before them. TVR could reskin and throw the GT500 engine in. Honda could make an NSX that is affordable. Lotus could make a car people want.

Exactly

That's why I mentioned they can sell this platform to BMW for new M1 if such product line is planned. Soon everyone is approaching limit of ICE FR and needs to go MR eventually for ultimate performance

Basically the same as a C7??? What are you smoking??

@ML7- I was referring to the cost of inputs ie like GM would do. 2 seats, 4 tires, fiberglass, small block V8, transmission, glass, interior, aluminium frame construction. All very very similar to the C7. If you speak with the accounting department you would be surprised by how close they are in cost.

C8 will have a “portfolio” of model so they say.
I will order a Corvette SUV with seating for 7 please.
My wife will order a Corvette Hatchback for utility.

Biggest area of cost savings versus competition is GM's pushrod V8...they make 2 million a year across all car and truck brands. a huge economy of scale plus its a great engine..reliable, powerful and durable though less sophisticated tech.

I was very surprised that the Corvette didn't feature the new, great, twin turbo DOHC V8 that showed up in about 100 CT6's that went to GM executives.

But, thinking about it, I realized that the only cost-cutting strategy is to carry over the existing engine.

I suspect as production gets going and these hit the real world, that we will start seeing overheating problems and perhaps engine fires.

GM has indicated a future V8 for the Vette will be based on the "same architecture" as the Blackwing. No doubt this will be a high performance model.

Next up, Tesla to explain how they save money by beta testing their products on unsuspecting customers, building cars in a tent and not thoroughly vetting their batteries to avoid fires.

When GM talks about a portfolio just like the C7, they are not referring to an SUV. Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1. The C8 platform can't be used for anything else. It is a single purpose design. Maybe a plugin hybrid or BEV. Maybe. If a SUV or two show up they will be based off existing GM products and have some Corvette DNA added (engine, headlights and tail lights).

This Corvette will sell enough to justify its development costs. Just like every Corvette before it.

No need for crazy nonsense like a separate Corvette brand or selling the platform to someone else. That will NEVER happen.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Cadillac version of this platform with then backwing engine...
