How Bad Do You Want One? Florida Dealer Marks Up New Supra By $40,000!

Considering how long folks have waited for the 2020 Toyota GR Supra, we can't exactly say we didn't see this coming. Toyota dealerships across the country are finally getting their hands on the new sports car and—surprise surprise—some are slapping on serious markups. In the case of Al Hendrickson Toyota in Coconut Creek, Florida, it's $40,000 serious.

Initially brought to our attention via Instagram, the Florida Toyota dealer appears to be selling a Supra with a whopping $40,000 "Market Value Adjustment," a fact confirmed to The Drive via phone call with one of Al Hendrickson's salespeople.

Not even sure I'd pay $40k in total for something that ugly.

Dealers are morons, but the bigger moron is anyone willing to pay the markup. No car is worth a markup!

I absolutely agree that no car is worth a mark-up. I actually find very few that are truly worth the full amount. At full list price, there is a good profit in the car.

While dealers can set any price they desire, it is not without repercussions. If someone pays $40K over, they will be butt hurt about it forever once the newness wears off. BUT if Toyota were made aware there are repercussions. Manufacturers have been known to throttle supply to the price gougers and open supply to those who don't dick people around.

In my experience manufacturers are slow to call dealers on the table for markups even though its their name on the building and their brand that suffers. I suspect by not doing so its appeasement for how bad they treat dealers generally. Porsche has raised it to an art form allowing dealers to profit generously from limited addition models.

I don’t have a problem dealerships asking over MSRP but 40 over on the Supra is just ridiculous! I can see 5-10 over for what it is...

As this car is a bit of mongrel and not a Toyota product nor worthy of the name Supra, now that the Corvette is out and close to the price it was before, they should just cancel production and pretend that his failed exercise never happened. It will be best in the long run to treat it as a learning experience in how not to do a new legacy car.

Car dealers who charge premiums are pathetic and MUST BE AVOIDED so they will ultimately be the loser.

On the other hand, that electronic filing fee seems like a good deal.

Is it normal practice for dealers to charge all the fees on the addendum in Florida? Dealer Services, Electronic Filling, and Private Tag Agency Fees all sounds pretty bogus to me. We have Electronic Filing Fee $29 and Document Fee $85 in California but that’s pretty much standard at all dealerships.

People here acting like they wouldn't get as much as possible for something they were selling if they thought there was a market for it.

That's an ignorant answer. Sure, if you have one item, you want to get the most for it. But, when you have a dealership and you pull that stunt on a highly desirable car, the manufacturer will take revenge on you and that affects your whole volume and therefore your bottom line. You have ZERO awareness of how a business works much less a dealership.

You are an idiot if you actually pay over MSRP for any car...or anything for that matter...500.00 bucks worth of extra fees, on top of that? And the nerve to charge an extra almost 700.00 buck fee, also? At least when you buy a house, its a bidding war...

@MDarringer I've been in the car business for over 22 yrs as everything from sales to GM in predominantly high line stores and at Mercedes now for about 7 years. Manufacturers that don't have have a market adjustment clause couldn't care less since they offload their inventory and that's all they care about. Also, manufacturers allocate cars based on a turn and earn system since not only is that the most efficient process but anything outside of that leaves them open to litigation from the dealer principles with a paper trail a mile long. I'm surprised you don't know that seeing as you seem to be the end all be all of the automotive business on this site. Try selling that ish to someone else...coffee's for closers.

I will reiterate: Manufacturers retaliate against dealers to dick customers around. I'm surprised you don't know that, but you're just a sleazy sales person, not an owner.
