BMW To Charge Owners $80 Annually To Access Apple's Free Carplay
From the 2019 model year onward any new BMW sold will require the owner to pay an $80 annual fee in order to connect their Apple iTelephone device to their premium luxury automobile. Where most automakers include the connectivity in most products, occasionally reserved for higher trim models, BMW will charge an additional access. The audacity!

the fact that you have to "back-out" of the CarPlay app when you what to access other OEM functions is silly. they're not totally integrated within the vehicle systems. CarPlay & AndroidAuto are simply 3rd-party apps that cost automakers money to license for use you their own vehicles. Seems like BMW is just passing along those cost to customers.

When you pay BMW prices, you should not get cash raped for what people get elsewhere for free.

Just lost a level of respect for BMW. Non-premium brands don't charge this fee.

On top of this, they do not offer Android Auto on their lineup. 2 reasons to shops elsewhere

Okay, take this for what is worth, I was told by a BMW NA insider that the reason BMW charges for Apple Carplay is they asked both Apple and Google to shut down the monitoring and track parts of the software. Apple said yes but it will cost you (I’m sure BMW is still making a profit on it), Googles Android Auto refused. I wouldn’t expect to see it on Android any time soon.

Interesting... thanks for sharing!

Of course if we're into conspiracies this juicy bit could leak either from Apple/Google or BMW, and only BMW stands to gain from it to patch up the bad press.

That must be a joke!

I kept hearing that BMW even copied pics from connected phones.
So this sounds a little strange.

If this is true, then I for one commend BMW. Otherwise, this is slow sales suicide.

So you already pay north of $70 K for one of our high margin products, but we are going to charge you $80 more for something that is free on $20 K cars?
Probably to help offset the $5,000 they charge you for a package to include navigation.
