When it comes to the electric vehicle game, it's really been pitiful to see the traditional automakers swing and miss. Simply put, not one single product has had the juice to properly rival what Tesla has been up to.

The only one that has a chance from what we've seen — so far — is the Porsche Taycan. And even that is not a guaranteed home run.

With the Audi e-tron sport-utility vehicle and Mercedes-Benz EQC on their way, we're still not impressed. We need to see something that actually is competitive.

Will BMW bring its "A" game?

Dubbed the iNext, BMW's all-electric SUV is expected to be one of the first proper EVs from Germany that can go head-to-head with Tesla. Rumored to get up to around 400 miles on a full charge, the iNext may have what it takes.

But, from a styling perspective, these latest spy shots may not light a fire under anyone's ass. Just see what's coming down the 'pike, Spies!



The disguised test mule, snapped on the back of a trailer outside one of the brand's German facilities, can be seen to feature styling distinctly different from the brand's conventionally-powered SUVs.

It sits lower to the ground and has a more streamlined shape than its size equivalent, the X5, which is conveniently parked above the iNext prototype on the trailer. The less upright design will improve aerodynamic properties, allowing it to a achieve an EV range tipped to be up to 400 miles in top variants...

Tesla shares down nearly 13 percent in after hours trading after larger than expected loss in second quarter. Sell off expected to continue when the markets open.
Another competitor such as this BMW will put more pressure on Tesla.

The iNext name is a bit strange but it comes down to what BMW delivers product wise. If it has the range, some of BMW's previously thrilling dynamics which have found their way into the X3 and a quality interior, it should hurt sales of the Tesla Model X.

I doubt that name will follow into the market -The germans will come up with some Alpha Numeric Gibberish to identify ALL Evs eventually.

However - it does not make sense to have two different same size vehicles on two different Platforms. Eventually they will have to engineer Platforms that can use ICE or EV.

I still do not know how much demand there is for an EV SUV - none have sold well so far.

It won't be called iNext...they will come up with a really nice name like i3 xdrive 50e ecogreen or something stupid like that...and then they will make a "m version" with a few m's in the name and no less than 20 "M" logos inside and outside the car.

I hope SanJose is putting a down payment on a Ford F-150 Raptor along with the other fanboys.
Analysts are concluding that there is no line of sight to Tesla being sustainably profitable.
The $400 million loss includes the carbon offsets. Without those someone has to turn the lights off.

Yup, Tesla had a $400m loss. Not great. Also far better than Q1 and they had record deliveries and revenue for the quarter while mostly holding their margin. They also have $5 billion in the bank, more cash than they have ever had on hand.

Currently losses are 3 years of run rate assuming no changes to sales or funding rounds. You guys will be claiming bankruptcy for a long, long time, just like you have been for the past X number of years.

I wish it was a profit but it was less worse than Q1 and I'm still optimistic for Q3/Q4.

So Elon clearly had his fill of shooting meth and doing bathroom-stall hookers and has issues marching orders: "A catastrophic business loss is the sign of unbridled success.

$5B is ONE new car from the ground up. Oh wait. Tesla doesn't do engineering or prototyping.

Yup all is rosy.

That's the thing, Tesla is not going to spend $5B on future models. The S/X apparently are not getting a refresh anytime soon, probably just small tweaks and maybe a battery/engine boost in Q1 2020. The Y is 70% Model 3, probably just need another $1B or so to complete. The entire Shanghai gigafactory stage 1 is going to cost $500M, and that is being financed at 3% interest by Chinese banks and that will allow for up to 3,000 cars/week, 150k/year.
