What's ONE Vehicle You Would NEVER Let Your Friends Buy?
For the past several weeks I've been pretty excited. That's because, for the first time in a long time, I'd be taking delivery of a press vehicle from an automaker I had never had the chance to drive before.

I had been in London years ago and I was dying to drive an Alfa Romeo Brera. But, unfortunately, the timing didn't quite work out. I'd have to wait until the marque made its triumphant return to the US.

And, it's now here.

Although I was to have a test run in a Giulia Quadrifoglio that opportunity got canceled. Why? Troubles with the car. It was "sent back to Detroit," according to my contacts. If it was crushed or experimented on we'll never know. Reliability hasn't exactly been Alfa's strong suit since it returned to the States.

Fast forward to present day. I am now behind the wheel of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. And, the excitement has worn quickly.

Its interior creaks and moans. The switchgear feels "meh" at best. The infotainment's main display isn't fine or crisp, and the user experience is dreadful. And, it's not cheap, costing more than $85,000 as tested. But, boy, it is fast. 500+ horsepower helps.

One of my dear friends has a vintage Alfa in the family. It has been a problem child — no kidding — but the red head is loved dearly. Because of this history he's been keen to get behind the wheel of one of the company's new vehicles. But, I had to deliver the news to him: This vehicle is definitely in the "no go" zone.

Now, I am just hoping I make it through the rest of my week without the vehicle leaving me stranded. We'll see, Spies!

That said, I've got to ask: Is there ONE vehicle you would NEVER let your friends buy?

I leased a Niro PHEV, and so far it's been an outstanding vehicle. Even if the gas engine is running it returns outstanding MPG, as well as performance with both the ICE and the electric motor running. Yes, the Kia and Hyundai cars of the past I would have had no interest in, but what they sell now is great.

@atc98092 Don't mind 80HO because he is a racist bigot. He hates Korean people so of course they can do nothing right.

No surprise there. I've never seen any auto site with as many anti-EV commenters as this one. I have never even driven a Tesla, and likely would never buy one, but I hope they make it and continue to drive other manufacturers to up their game.

@atc98092 Oh puhleaze! The EV Gestapo here is massive and they are poised with their CTRL + V diatribes they they spew voluminously verbatim. They are the truly hateful people here.

I'm NOT anti EV and am quite for them and almost bought a Tesla P90 years ago and am glad that I did not after all the shenanigans that Musk has pulled like calling a hero diver a pedo and announcing the company was going private to burn the shorts and screw over other shareholders.

I despise Musk and therefore can't support his products nor the horrendous timeframe to get them fixed (45 day waiting time for parts in the GTA) nor do I like the PT Barnum stunts of Musk to get publicity and deflect from other issues on hand. I'm not anti EV -I'm anti Musk and hence Tesla and would like to see new leadership takeover so the company can hopefully prosper -something I doubt an egomaniac like Musk can or will be able to execute.

Tesla, after hearing about the worst-ever service experiences of my co-workers. Waiting several months for parts is insane. And the more cars Telsa sells, the worse the service experience will be.

Nice try except that UNLIKE you I have not equated the low quality of car to the lack of intelligence of a cultural group. You hate Koreans with a KKK passion given your commentary.

Apparently, your advice is getting through. Very few people are buying Alfas.

The thing with them is that some have to go to the body shop to have issues fixed BRAND NEW.

A link a Dutch auto site translated below. https://www.autoedizione.nl/duitse-auto-gaat-vaker-stuk-dan-de-italiaanse/

Through extensive tests and market studies of the British ECU Testing LTD and Search Laboratory, a fairly reliable conclusion was reached after 6 months with regard to cars from Italy. They are more reliable than the German ones. Something that is popularly preferred the other way around. In the meantime, Japanese cars show a defect even less frequently and the French is the most reliable in Europe.

German cars break 11% more often , according to the 58 defects per 100,000 cars in the country classification (Italian 48, French 25 and Japanese 17). Volkswagen, Opel, Audi, BMW and Mercedes all score worse than Alfa Romeo. That says quite a lot about Alfa's current quality (Giulia, Stelvio and Giulietta). Striking are the good results from Toyota (5 defects per 100,000), but also Renault (16 defects per 100,000). Incidentally, the differences are relatively small in most cases, because manufacturers today cannot afford to make many mistakes. For example, Fiat scored low in the segments where it operates, but only had 2 defects more than the best product.

If I was advising someone who was really going to spend their own money on a vehicle today, I would only say to get something from Toyota or Lexus and avoid any CVT transmission choices in any brand. Be boring. Sleep at night. Save money.

Life is too short to drive a crappy car.
Avoid all transmissions, get an electric!

Yes, get an EV. It's important to drive something that is bad for the environment.

I have had TWO Root Canals without anesthesia - I am allergic to Novocaine and its offspring - and it depends on how bad the infection is - it was a relief finally even with the pain. Remember - my Father was a Dental Surgeon.

I agree - NO CVT - and probably also no cheap Dual Clutch - the premium manufacturers have far better Dual Clutch units - but the Nissans(Jatco) and Ford models have been horrible.

I probably would say a FIAT as the worst in the USA.

However - my CHrysler Minivan, and others in the family - when properly maintaining the transmissions - have been reliable and gotten High mileage

In addition to the Fiat - I would tell them to completely avoid ALL Old British sports cars - where once they actually designated their Passenger seat as the MECHANIC's Seat
