SPIED! LARGE And In CHARGE, The Next-gen Mercedes-Maybach Is SNAPPED With Minimal Camo
One of my favorite luxury vehicles on this great Earth is the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. It really is just a gem.

Although some will try to take it down simply as "just an S-Class," boy, they've got it all wrong. Likely they've never ridden in one. It's just that much better than your run-of-the-mill S560.

Even though it's brilliant though, it can't escape time. Simply put, the current-gen vehicle is getting a bit long in the tooth and the competition is creeping up.

While we've seen the next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class undergoing developmental testing, I do not recall seeing the big daddy out and about. That all changes today as we've received a batch of spy shots from Europe.

Pictured in its next-gen skin, the upcoming Maybach remains large and in charge. From what we can tell, it appears that its headlights and taillights will get rather squinty yet its front grille will remain prominent. Frankly, it's almost a bit similar to the now refreshed BMW 7-Series known for its legendary schnozola.

Why do they bother?

Because when the S Class is the #1 undisputed global luxury car champ, and the Maybach trim sales more in China alone than Rolls/Bentley sedan sales combined...you can do what you want....completely unbothered & unchallenged

I agree that "...the S Class is the #1 undisputed global luxury car champ..." and have said that many times, BUT Maybachs have either been embarrassing LWB S Class mongrels or reduced to a blingy trim level. The S Class is gold, but all Maybach evokes is Hitler's favorite parade car and the two aforementioned stumbles.

Now if they were to resurrect something as patrician as the brilliant 600 of yore with styling that has NOTHING in common with an S Class and which evokes that icon, then I'd be all in favor of this.

LOL OOOOH you mean the same 100 year old company that had to take a 10% stake in them to keep them afloat but even after helping them Tesla still can’t stop the masssive bleeding in profits and executive departures and is on the phone with Mercedes now trying to get more support in addition to using their sprinter vans as a base for their future commercial product....

Oooooh yea looks like the master is still teaching the student ...and I think you meant (EQC) the doc that’s sold out until 2021...keep trying A fot effort

THey Bother for profits and for China - where 2/3 of the Maybach models are sold - and where cars like this are virtually always Chauffeur driven. Other manufacturers cater to the Chinese market by producing LONG versions of their cars for that market only. However - Mercedes also needed a platform for long limousines that before the Maybach were custom made only.
No - Matt - a stand alone Maybach - which DID NOT WORK the first time - would have required pricing similar to a Phantom again if not more.

THe Maybachs are far superior to any regular S class - they are far closer to the Phantom/Mulsanne in ride - but handle better than either. ANd they are half the price of either as well. Yes - they could have called it the Mercedes 600 - that is just a name. AS far as styling not in common with the S-class - all Mercedes vehicles have styling in common with the S-class - that is where Mercedes starts its updates and they filter down to lesser models.

But as the agent said - those that knock it likely have never been in one. You need to drive a regular S-Class and a Maybach in comparison (As well as the Phantom too).

The Maybach lineup shows the power of a 'focus group' and giving your customers what they want.

Blingy styling, bigger is better, make customers feel like they are third world dictator - but don't cross the $200,000 mark.

After the 52S Maybach failure Mercedes took a focused look at this segment and nailed it (no accounting for taste though).

Funny story - I was getting my car serviced at MB Manhattan and there was a pristine S560 (normal one) and a Maybach done up in the same two-tone green paint.

I asked my service rep if MB was selling a short wheel base S560 and they told me that Mercedes custom orders normal S560's with the blingy Maybach grills, paint, trim, and badges if customers want them. In the case I saw, the customer ordered their two-tone green normal Maybach (which they curiously wanted to drive themselves only to find it too big) so Mercedes fabricated a smaller one for them. He told me there are about 5 of the "fake-Maybachs" in the NYC area.

By the way, Mercedes Benz Manhattan dealer is owned and operated by Mercedes Benz corporate and is not an independent dealer. Its worth a look if you are in NYC and love cars - its on the ground floor of a fancy rental apartment building in Hells Kitchen called "Mercedes House".

...which has one of the best "pool scenes" in NYC during the summer.
