Volkswagen Kills Off The Golf R Performance Model In US

Volkswagen of America recently announced changes to its 2020 lineup, and one model was notably absent: the Golf R.

The company did say that the regular Golf would be reduced to a single Value Edition trim and the GTI would continue to be available in S and SE trims. Motor Authority contacted VW and asked about the Golf R.

The automaker confirmed that the current-generation AWD hot hatch has reached the end of production (for the U.S., at least) and will not be available for the 2020 model year. If you’re in the market for a new Golf R, though, you can still get a 2019 model – or wait until the next generation arrives on U.S. shores.

Curious as to why you think the Golf R is overpriced? What compares to the Golf R that is as good or better for less money?

It's just a Golf with a lot of garbage on it. It's $10K overpriced. It should be a $30K base and the GTI should be down around $22K base. For the price a Mustang GT will obliterate it on all parameters of performance.

It scalds the Golf R for acceleration, deceleration, cornering, durability, reliability, low cost of maintenance, styling, ...

Tell me, what's the point of a nice interior given the low quality of Golf R as manifested in its substandard reliability, durability, and high repair costs.

Explain to us how a Mustang does in the snow? Can the Mustang carry 4 people comfortably? How does the Mustang ride? I can go on and on and on. The Golf R is incredibly reliable, has phenomenal interior materials, and frankly the only thing that competes with it is its brother the Audi S3. The Golf R has always been purposely brought into the U.S in small numbers and even though dealers could sell more its a combination of strategy and lack of bodys available to build more for the U.S market. Your lack of automotive knowledge shines bright darringer

@trobaccord The last time I checked, driving in snow was not the #1 determining parameter for determining the best sports car. The Golf R due to its low ride height would also be ill-suited to snow. Stop being a triggered stupid VW fanboy. If you're stuck pretending you like them because that's the only sales gig you can get, then just be honest about being a partisan hack.

mdarringer stick to selling Chryslers they suit your taste and IQ well.. You have yet to provide a competitive car to the R that is even a close comparison... I know many exotic owners that drive R's for winter cars and compare it in many ways to their considerably more expensive cars so instead of giving your dimwitted opinion provide some facts and maybe just maybe people might take you seriously

All the Civic Type R owners can now breathe a breath of relief. The R KING is gone ...for now.

There go a dozen sales.

The Golf R sold a little over 3K units in 2018. 30K should be more like it for a glorified, "gingerbreaded" GTI based on the proletariat Golf.

If VW thought they could sell 30K units they would have brought 30K units it's that simple. The R simply isn't all that. It's a fattened GTI on steroids. The GTI is the better driver's car. AWD makes the responses dull. The GTI is easier to hustle.

Golf R not for sale for MY2020 as VW introduces the eighth generation Golf. R will return for the MY2021 - as stated in the VW Press Release.
