Buick To Start Offering Encore Crossovers With 3 Cylinder Engines

Three-cylinder engines are pretty rare in the United States, but it appears two will be offered under the hood of the 2020 Buick Encore GX.

While the company has been tight-lipped about performance specifications, GM Authority says the upcoming crossover will come standard with a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 137 hp (102 kW / 139 PS) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque. The entry-level engine will reportedly be paired to a continuously variable transmission that sends power exclusively to the front wheels.

Another “great idea” from GM... so they can charge extra for the engine you really want and the vehicle probably needs..

Three-cylinder engines are becoming a LOT more common. Ford already has one out and the 2020 Escape is going to be delivered with a 3 cylinder.

The CVT at GM is a dumb idea. CVTs are garbage.

is it supposed to offer better economy? I mean a turbo 3 has got to be a hard working mill...something that probably won't last very long?

This is another "laboratory mpg" engine. Just like the Ecoboosts that get great mileage in the lab, but equal or less in real life, these engines take advantage of loopholes that inflate mpg.

That loophole is carbon production.

The new 3 cylinder on the Escape will deactivate to two cylinders. My guess is that during the test in the lab, this engine produces more MPG, but on the road it will be likely huffing and puffing and drinking fuel.

Ironically, it will likely be putting out MORE carbon per mile.

Most people who got the base 4 cylinder turbo (1.6/1.5T) in the Fusion were stunned to discover that they knew people with the old 2.5 that got better mpg.
