DRIVEN + VIDEO: So, What's The All-new Porsche Taycan REALLY Like? FIRST DRIVE — Right Here, Right Now!
In the world of electric vehicles, Tesla has been dominating. It's that simple.

The big call from around the globe, whether at hedge funds or in enthusiast forums, is that when the traditional automakers come online, they will crush TSLA. We're still waiting. Everything released, to date, has missed as President Trump would say, "Bigly."

But, then there's the all-new Porsche Taycan. This is the first vehicle that really is set to potentially hit Tesla between the eyes.

While I was lukewarm at first, this all-new clip from The Fully Charged Show has juiced me up — pun intended. See what I mean by watching it below. Then, weigh in and let us know what you think: Does the Taycan have what it takes?

30 launches. It didn't break. And it can still drive home. Sounds promising, Spies!

The Fully Charged Show is given exclusive access to get Jonny Smith behind the wheel of the new first Porsche all electric car - the Taycan - and drive it full throttle from 0-124 mph (200 km/h) dozens of times. The Taycan is a twin motor 600+hp, 96kWh, 800-volt 4-door 4-seater coupe with a supposed range of 320 miles (≈ 515 km) . It can reach 0-62 mph (0 -100 km/h) in just over 3 seconds repeatedly, and can rapid charge at over 250kW. With a charging time ≈ 0 - 80% in about 40 minutes.

Prices for this 'Turbo' launch model will be around £130,000 ( ≈ €141k or USD $158k) with cheaper/slower versions kicking off around £65,000 within 18 months of the car's launch in late 2019.

The Taycan is potentially as much of a milestone for Porsche as the aircooled flat six 911 was, taking aspects of the new 992, 911 and Panamera, but is ground-up all new. Jonny was allowed to take the genuine first drive of the car alone for some 30 full throttle launches, but the final spec and aesthetic details of the Taycan still remain under embargo. The full story is on Jonny's blog entry on our website:

The Taycan is going to kill in a very good way....unlike Tesla.

Too bad Tesla is the market leader with an incredible, dominant product, and Porsche is about a decade late.

I gotta say I’m excited for the Taycan, however performance wise, at least from acceleration it sounds like it only keeps up with the current Tesla at “0-60 a little over 3 seconds” I mean the E 63 and M5 are doing that currently

And if I’m not mistaken the Model S is running to 60 in around 2.5 seconds, and while I know there is more to acceleration, I hope Porsche comes harder at every level because those performance figures are underwhelming for how long they’ve been talking about the Taycan.

It’s funny Tesla just sent the Performance models to auto journalist who let the numbers and drag times speak for themselves, while Porsche has been hyping the Taycan up for a while. I hope we can believe the hype and it’s worth the wait

While I get it, "fast is cool", there is a lot more to a great car than just 0-60 times. Many fast cars are numb and lack soul while others feel alive in your hands. I'll take the latter.

Yup, I said there’s more to it than acceleration, but when a manufacturer makes as much noise about a car as Porsche has made about the Taycan, it better be able to out accelerate a car that’s been on the market for 8 years and have a soul which I’m sure is what it will cost lol!

@pug You must have entirely missed the point of the acceleration runs. In a Tesla, doing that brings a warning that it is detrimental to the car whereas Porsche can do it repeatedly with no ill effect. The demonstration was 100% Porsche putting Tesla on notice that a manufacturer with real engineering skill and proper prototype development is on the scene.

This video is not entirely accurate. The warning ONLY comes up for Ludicrous+ mode, which bring the 0-60 from 2.5 seconds down to 2.4 seconds. The normal Ludicrous mode comes with no caveats and 30 runs later it will STILL be faster than the Taycan. Porsche better hope it significantly outhandles the Model S.

BTW, the now $55k Model 3 Performance can do 30 launches at 3.1 seconds, so hopefully it is faster than that as well.

The more choices for consumers the better - This preview of the Taycan was awesome - 30+ full throttle launches!

They have to find another name for their top models. Base, GTS and Blank. It can't be Turbo if there are a bunch of batteries underfoot. Electro would be more fitting.

Agreed. The planned use of "turbo" is stupid. "RSR" would be an option.

Instead of Turbo - how about some synonyms of "Energy"...force, power, vigor, vitality, strength, stamina, dynamism, vim,

I would vote for the top spec, highest-power Taycan to the the "Taycan Force"

Electrolux is a Huge Multi-National Appliance Manufacturer based in Sweded
Their ownership of the name "Electrolux" is long and well established
You can be sure that the name Electrolux is not going to be used by VWAG on a Porsche.

No matter how marvelous the engineering is, or how well this performs, I predict it will tank in the marketplace for two reasons:

1. It will cost a gazillion dollars, and
2. Porsche buyers don't seem to want innovation from the company - they just want the same 911 they have lusted over since they were teenagers and can now afford.

They also have wealthy guilt so they need an EV to save the Earth's blood and if that just happens to be a $150K Taycan, so much the better.

The Taycan will easily outhandle any Tesla. Also, if Porsche creates a Taycan Turbo, it will match or surpass the Tesla in straight-line acceleration. Throw in the Porsche bade, huge dealer network and increased reliability and Porsche has a winner on its hands.

I can't wait for the EV revolution to arrive full throttle. Tesla's days will be numbered.
