Would You Dare Go Back To Diesel? Volkswagen Proclaims: ‘Now It Is Absolutely Clean’

Recent comments from a Volkswagen executive suggests that the German automaker is not yet ready to fully let go of diesel-powered vehicles. The comments, which were related by Sebastian Willmann, Head of Diesel Engine Development at VW, were published by the veteran carmaker in a blog post promoting its 2.0 TDI EA288 Evo diesel engine, which is designed to meet the strict Euro 6d-Temp standard.

During his interview, Willmann highlighted the importance of diesel engines to Volkswagen’s lineup. The executive mentioned that diesels remain popular among car buyers due to their longevity, helping vehicles’ mileages reach between 400,000 to 500,000 kilometers (248,000 to 310,000 miles).

In the 1970's we were spoonfed the end of the ICE ERA - because of the lack of oil supplies - and the inability to meet upcoming Federal clean air standards - and they actually found a way.

A diesel is just another type of ICE engine - and eventually they will find a way to make them comply with these standards too. THe question is WHEN not IF. IF lived in Europe - where the cost of Petrol is sky high - but Diesel is regulated much lower for the trucking industry - low enough to be able to justify a pricier diesel engine - and there is almost no EV infrastructure - I would be looking for a diesel to commute with. And so will LOTS of others over there - because they could not afford the Gas based car.

I never knew this: "A diesel is just another type of ICE engine - and eventually they will find a way to make them comply with these standards too."

Gee - ICE means Internal Combustion Engine - and Diesels are indeed that - I am surprised a person who claims to know cars - NEVER KNEW THAT ONE.

TomM You're a pedantic, prattling asshole that pontificates.

You completely missed the point YET AGAIN.

As a past TDI owner, yes I would consider another one. But I believe a) they'll never come back to the US with it and b) even if they did they won't offer it in a vehicle I want. Plus, now that I've moved to a PHEV, it would be tough going back to visiting a fuel station 3 times a month or more. Right now I'm at 6 weeks since I filled up, and I'm at just under 3/4 full tank after almost 1400 miles. And about $15-20 in electricity.

And if you had an EV you'd never go to refuel, wouldn't even know what the price of gas is anymore.

Yep, I'm very anxious for the VW ID Crozz to arrive. It should be about the same time my lease is up.

But with an EV it turns to a paper weight for hours recharging.

Matt, unless you're going on a road trip, which I rarely do, the car is always fully charged in my garage overnight. There's never any waiting for a charge. If I need to take a long trip, and can't accept stopping at the DC Fast Chargers, then I'll rent something.

How long can you keep fuel in your tank before it goes bad?

I figure I'll go a couple of months. I'm taking a trip over the mountains next week, so I'll be topping the tank before I leave. It will be about a 250 mile trip all together, and the Niro PHEV has about a 600 mile range on gas, which was one of the reasons I chose it. So if I still have a half tank after a couple of months, I'll top it off just to add some fresh fuel. Once the weather cools, I'll be running the engine more often just for heat, so it should be fine over the winter.

The dumbest thing about the TDI "scandal" is that they were and still are considerably cleaner than most gas engines! The EPA just doesn't want them here so they make the standards so difficult to meet they have to choke them with all of the emissions components which dont make it economically feasible. Chrysler just settled their exact same cheating settlement and got a slap on the wrist while they attempted to bankrupt VW so its obvious there is considerable favoritism and collusion between the EPA and certain automakers.
