Porsche Taycan Range Anxiety And Now A LAME Nav Center Screen Compared To Tesla. Two Strikes ALREADY?

Porsche Taycan Range Anxiety And Now A LAME Nav Center Screen Compared To Tesla. Two Strikes ALREADY?
The first official photo of the upcoming Porsche Taycan dashboard/center nav screen was released and when I saw it, I kind of thought it was a joke.

Shaking head...But it ISN'T.

It's pretty much the same size and horizontal orientation as most old school luxury cars today.

Respectfully, WTF ARE THEY THINKING?????

Did they not do ANY research on their competition?

I mean we've been writing for YEARS that the ginormous screen in the Tesla Model S was probably the MAIN reason that seduced many buyers to roll the dice and jump from BMW, Lexus, MB, Audi, etc.

Whenever ANYONE shows me a Tesla the FIRST thing they show off is the SCREEN. And I can't lie. As a tech guy, my guess is if you surveyed owners of any competitor, 90% would PREFER a screen like that over what's in their BMW, etc.

That one item makes the car look like it's from the future, not the past like all the others.

Size DOES matter in this case.

And doesn't a candidate for this car want a BRAND NEW interface that is different from past cars like getting a new iPhone?

Don't underestimate how important it is for this group of customers to SHOW OFF their toy to show you how much SMARTER, BETTER and more ahead of the trends they are than us. They LIVE for this.

So it leads me to ask the question...with the reviewers of Taycan saying the range doesn't match the Tesla and now the center screen being same as it ever was...Is that TWO STRIKES against Taycan even BEFORE it launches?

Spies, discuss...

Taycan is looking awesome and will be the best EV ever made, by far. No one who can afford the Taycan cares about screen size which is a gimmick that only children care about. The screen in the Model 3 looks like an iPad was attached to the dash by a ghetto tuning shop.

right. it's not about the screen size; it's about what information it'll display & how it's mounted in the overall center cluster design.

I sat in a newer Ram 1500 Long Horn. Must say the huge screen really adds to the interior "machismo" for the large truck.

On the flip, I like the extended widescreen displays in the new S-class.

I wonder how much would it cost to replace that ginormous screen in the Tesla? More importantly, how many months will it take to get it??

About $500 with labor, it's a standard 15 inch laptop monitor.

This is why the failure rate was so high on these screens. Elon was told they were not approved for auto use, but he did not care.

I don't believe it has a high failure rate, there were some flicker issues in the past fixed with OTA software updates. It is also easy to replace as mentioned before, big win over the custom screens being put in cars today that will cost thousands to swap out.

Lol I’m less concerned about the dash and more concerned about the name of the song/artist playing in its display, surely someone in marketing had a good laugh

Good catch. That is disconcerting.

The failure rate on the large screen in a Tesla very high. They were not approved for automotive use initially. Not sure about now.
It is a Porsche, it has been well sorted and will prove to be far superior to the tesla.
Tesla share price below $220 today and slipping on shoddy construction on their solar panels causing fires at Walmart.
Roh-roh.

Maybe THEIR market research told them something very different. Porsche is trying to attract Porsche buyers and make sure they aren't abandoning ship to go to Tesla.

I think Porsche has made it very clear that it will handle and perform like other Porsches. It is a performance car so don't think a giant screen is prerequisite for that criteria.

1) there is no Taycan range anxiety 2) purchasers of the Taycan will not be buying the car because of screen size

1 - I do not see any such range anxiety as well - and the Porsche has a charging system that can add 250 miles of range in less than an hour too.

As far as a Nav Screen - Gee - I manage to find my way around a race track without a Big Nav screen- in fact with none at all. You can only go ONE WAY. I hope the Porsche is fun enough that I would want my eyes on the road.

Not a single thing you mention here is even implied in the article you linked. For an article on a pro-Tesla web site, it's actually quite supportive of the Taycan.

Plus, there's a very large screen hiding right below the frame.

Porsche isn't losing money the way Tesla is, so they will be around for a lot longer.

Porsche cars are dynamically superior to the Teslas. The true Porschephiles aren't going to be driving a boring Tesla.

For me it is the awkward clock in the middle of the dashboard that kills it for me. Looks pretty nice overall and I think there will be a second screen down below what is shown in the image.

The Model 3 screen is far more practical for a self-driving car, something this is not designed to be.

That is the Sport Chrono clock for measuring lap times etc. Porsche pedigree.

The notion that people buy cars purely based on the infotainment is ridiculous. Things like exterior design, interior quality, performance, brand image, fuel efficiency, handling etc. are part of the equation too.

The Taycan will have Tesla's number when it comes to interior quality, performance, handling and brand image. You can bet that if Porsche launches a Taycan Turbo or Turbo S, it will match or exceed Tesla's straight line acceleration. The Taycan already has the handling aspect won.

With the same shoddy engineering and workmanship found in the battery powering your tesla model 3.
Porsche, Jaguar Audi and other European manufacturers are more concerned with safety than all out range. An electrical engineer explained to me how the technology differs, but that ultimately it is the stability that is more important and 200 miles of range is great for 90+ percent of drivers.

SanJoseDriverSanJoseDriver - 8/23/2019 3:42:14 PM

So 200 miles is fine when it is clear that Tesla is the only car that even can make 300+ mile cars today (3 of them, starting at $46k before incentives). So far not one car from another manufacturer has beaten the 2012 Model S on range, and that is the number one factor holding people back from buying EVs.

The average consumer wants more than 200 miles, especially in this cost range. If you drive it like a Porsche, it will get 150 miles or less.

A thought: If it was possible to recharge to maximum range as quickly as it takes to fill a tank and at maybe as many place, range anxiety wouldn't matter?

SanJoseDriverSanJoseDriver - 8/23/2019 3:43:54 PM

It will get there eventually as cars become more efficient and charging rates increase. The fastest charging car today can get 120 miles in 5 minutes, most EVs get 25 miles in an hour of level 2 charging.
