The story started last month, when people working with Tesla's software and hardware found a way to enable FSD outside the regions where it's currently available. This includes Michal Gapinski, best known as the man behind the Tesla Android project aimed at enabling Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on Tesla EVs. Gapinski proceeded to test FSD in Europe, where the software is not legally allowed.
Tesla Android used a hardware device (a CAN bus device) that piggybacked on Tesla's infotainment system to unlock FSD. Owners still need to pay for FSD to be able to use it, which many European Tesla owners already have. However, this step clearly rattled Tesla, which has recently started cracking down on these efforts. This started with suspending the Tesla Android account on X for alleged violations of X rules.
