A widely shared image of California Governor Gavin Newsom in the classic “I Did That” pose—right arm raised, index finger pointing upward, with the bold red banner across the bottom—has resurfaced as a pointed critique of state policy. The meme visually assigns responsibility for California’s persistent cost-of-living challenges directly to the governor.

Democratic leaders, from Newsom to national figures, consistently speak about prioritizing affordability. They tout commitments to lower costs for housing, energy, groceries, and everyday needs, often positioning their policies as protections for working families. Yet California under Newsom continues to deliver some of the highest costs in the nation.

Nowhere is this clearer than at the pump. California maintains the highest gas tax in the country, recently reaching record levels even as leaders claim to fight for affordability. Combined with stringent environmental regulations and programs like Cap-and-Invest, these policies add significantly to fuel prices—often $1.50 to $2 or more above the national average. Californians pay billions extra annually compared to drivers elsewhere, a burden that hits lower- and middle-income households hardest.

Housing affordability remains equally strained. Median prices stay elevated, with restrictive zoning, lengthy environmental reviews, and regulatory barriers limiting new supply despite announced reforms. Energy costs follow the same trajectory, as aggressive climate mandates drive up bills even as rebates are offered as partial offsets.

This pattern reflects a broader Democratic approach: eloquent rhetoric centered on the people’s “real needs” paired with actions that expand taxes, regulations, and spending in ways that inflate costs. Businesses and residents have responded by leaving the state in search of more affordable alternatives. While Democrats highlight long-term climate and equity goals, the immediate impact on family budgets tells a different story.

The “I Did That” image serves as a stark visual reminder of the gap between promises and results. When gas taxes hit record highs amid claims of caring about affordability, the disconnect becomes impossible to ignore.
