Crashing into a truck or a semi-trailer is never a good thing, especially if you are traveling in a small passenger car. However, Euro NCAP thinks that European trailers pose unique hazards due to rear impact guards that provide little protection in the case of a crash. The agency points to the US trailer manufacturers, which install safer rear underrun guards in their vehicles.
When it comes to crash results, size matters, and weight also matters. Bigger cars provide more ample crumple zones to dissipate the impact's energy. Heavier vehicles are also at an advantage because they transfer more crash energy to the lighter car. However, size and weight are not the most important factors, or we would all be driving tanks.
