In a stunning display of selective intolerance, M Special Brewing Company in California ordered a customer to remove an American flag and a Trump flag from his car, labeling the display “political.” The Stars and Stripes—the very symbol of the nation that guarantees free speech and private property rights—was treated like a partisan stunt.
This is not neutral policy. It is selective enforcement that brands basic American pride and support for a President as radioactive while presumably tolerating other political signals. Businesses have the right to set rules on their property, but when those rules single out the American flag itself as unwelcome, they reveal an ideological hostility that alienates half the country. Customers who fly the national colors or support lawful political figures are not the problem. A brewery that treats those symbols as threats is.
Patriotism is not a partisan brand. Treating the American flag as controversial only deepens division. M Special Brewing Company’s decision sends a clear message: certain expressions of American identity are no longer welcome on their premises. Many customers will respond by taking their business—and their flags—elsewhere.
