If you're an EV owner living in the UK, you're not going to be happy reading this headline as the British government has just confirmed plans to debut a new pay-per-mile tax come April of 2028. Known as the Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED), this measure will apply to both battery electric cars as well as plug-in hybrids.

   

EV drivers will be taxed with 3 pence per mile, which is the equivalent of four cents (USD), whereas PHEV owners will pay 1.5 pence per mile, which is roughly two cents - rates that will be adjusted annually with inflation. This means that drivers who cover less than 9,300 miles per year can expect to pay an additional $350 (€300) just for owning an electric vehicle.
