This past Saturday, thousands of onlookers descended on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi for the world's first self-driving motorsport event, broadcast across a multitude of mediums across the globe in what promised to be a technological showcase for the ages. What followed was underwhelming and slightly cringe-worthy, but more than that, it proved that human drivers are in no danger of losing their jobs to computers. The A2RL (Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League)also gave me a real frame of reference to where self-driving cars are in the grand scheme of the automotive landscape. I'm now more convinced than ever that autonomous cars are still years away from becoming a reality, despite what various mad genius CEOs spout on a regular basis.
