A hybrid truck unveiled to the press Thursday for the first time runs on a hydrogen engine that emits no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases.

The engine, which was developed mainly by Tokyo City University, emits only water vapor from an exhaust pipe.


Hydrogen engines have already been put to practical use overseas in smaller vehicles, but the engines’ fuel-efficiency and horse-power limitations have thus far made them unsuitable for heavy freight vehicles.
