The R version of Jaguar's redesigned S-Type sedan takes power seriously, but does it with elegance, from a supercharged 400-horsepower V-8 to a gray-stained maple wood trim.
With a grille that makes you think of the front trim on earlier models, the exterior styling is classic Jaguar, but the interior is as modern as today's headlines. There's no mistaking that this is a true Jaguar.
The engineering is so sophisticated that even a major jab on the accelerator to get away from oncoming traffic at a basically blind intersection produced an instant speedy reaction that left me completely in control.
Indeed, control seems to be the rule; the R version obeys every driver whim with nary a complaint. Dynamic stability control does your thinking for you when the going gets rough, and the four-wheel anti-lock brakes have a panic feature when the stopping gets tough.
