The New XJ Long Wheelbase

OVERVIEW

Jaguar has extended the XJ saloon range with the addition of a new, long wheelbase version of its luxury sporting flagship.

The New XJ Long Wheelbase (LWB), which will be available from Autumn 2004 (dependent on market) not only provides greater room for rear-seat passengers but also offers a choice of seating configurations, new trim and specification options and a variety of communications and multi-media equipment packages.

The advantages of the New XJ Long Wheelbase do not compromise the excellent dynamic abilities and performance of the standard wheelbase car. Weighing just 24kg (53lb) more than the standard wheelbase model, the XJ Long Wheelbase posts fuel economy, emissions and performance figures equivalent to the standard wheelbase models. And remember that, in standard form, the new XJ is some 200kg (441lb) lighter than the previous generation XJ and around 100kg (221lb) lighter than its nearest rivals. This weight advantage is even more noticeable among the long wheelbase models, with the new XJ LWB easily lightest in class.

Combined with the agility and driving dynamics for which the new XJ saloon is already renowned, this makes the new long wheelbase Jaguar as impressive from the driver‘s seat as it is from the rear passenger seat, giving owners the best of both worlds according to their mood or requirements.

“The New XJ Long Wheelbase isn‘t a stretched version of the standard car – it‘s a fully integrated model in its own. That‘s one of the main reasons the driving experience is so close to the other models in the XJ range, and why owners will enjoy being at the wheel as much as sitting in the rear seat.“
Mick Mohan, Chief Programme Engineer, XJ

Like the latest generation of the standard wheelbase XJ, the New XJ Long Wheelbase shares all the advantages of advanced aluminium construction, including light weight, and significantly improved body strength, comprehensive safety features, refined performance, superb driving dynamics. The wheelbase and overall length of the new long wheelbase car have increased by 125mm (5 inches) and the rear roofline is subtly raised by 7mm (0.28 inches).

The New XJ Long Wheelbase is constructed using an extended version of the innovative aluminium monocoque introduced last year when the standard wheelbase model (SWB) was launched. The addi-tional body length is incorporated behind the B-pillars, the longer rear doors giving the long wheelbase car an integrated and graceful appearance as well as aiding passenger entry and exit.

“A Jaguar XJ with an interior package that more than matches rivals may surprise some people but this new long wheelbase model sets new standards across the board. The cabin
is a truly spacious and relaxing place to be and the generous interior dimensions really reinforce this.“

Mick Mohan, Chief Programme Engineer, XJ

With the longest wheelbase and overall length in the premium F segment, the New XJ LWB is comparable with the best-in-class for rear accommodation, offering a substantial 999mm (more than 39 inches) of legroom and fully class-competitive headroom.

Depending on specification and customer preference, there is a choice of four optional rear-seat configurations, including fixed or power-adjustable bench layouts and individual powered and heated rear seats separated by a centre console with additional storage space.

Burr walnut-finished Business Trays that fold down from the front seat-backs – and are big enough to hold a notebook computer – maximise comfort and convenience for passengers who need to work
in the car. There is also the facility to incorporate 6.5-inch display screens in the head restraints of the front seats, with rear-seat multi-media options including iPod, MP3 player and DVD connectivity. Communication possibilities include a telephone conference call facility for front and
rear passengers, while rear-seat passengers can specify voice-activation for the four-zone climate-control system, with individual
seat-to-seat settings.

Dependent on market, the New XJ Long Wheelbase offers the same choice of powerful, refined and efficient V8 petrol engines as the standard wheelbase car. The naturally aspirated 3.5 and 4.2 litre V8s and the range-topping 400bhp (298kW) DIN supercharged 4.2 litre V8 are all matched to Jaguar‘s advanced ZF six-speed automatic transmission.

The XJ saloon‘s elegant lines are enhanced by the increased length - the subtle increase in roof height ensures that the visual profile remains pure XJ. A range of new front grilles (depending on model, and shared by the SWB) plus the adoption of bigger, 18-inch diameter alloy wheels as standard (with 19 - and 20-inch options) confirm the luxurious, dynamic, distinctively Jaguar character of the long wheelbase version.

“The long wheelbase models add another dimension to the XJ line-up. The New XJ was designed from the outset to be available in long wheelbase guise and that is why the car seems natural in its styling and feel. The extra length also has the effect of visually lowering the car, giving it an even sleeker appearance.“
Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars

Despite the increase in length, the XJ Long Wheelbase remains compact enough to fit into a normal-size garage, and can easily cope with the tight spaces of multi-storey car parks – its turning circle is just 34cm (13 inches) wider than that of the standard wheelbase XJ saloon.

Dynamically, too, the New XJ Long Wheelbase is virtually indistinguishable from the standard wheelbase car. The aluminium monocoque shell retains its exceptional stiffness and light weight, while spring and damper settings and suspension mounts and bushing have been revised to give
the XJ LWB the same highly acclaimed level of ride, handling balance and steering feel as the standard wheelbase model. The revised suspension mountings also reduce transmitted noise levels and improve
overall refinement.

The XJ LWB includes a full list of active and passive safety features. Jaguar‘s Adaptive Restraint Technology System (A.R.T.S.) combines dual-stage driver and passenger airbags with seat-occupation sensing, side-impact chest airbags in the front seat bolsters, front and rear side air curtains, anti-whiplash seat design and ISOFIX rear child seat attachments. The XJ LWB has four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), traction control and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) as standard. High levels of security are also incorporated, with transponder-operated remote double deadlocking and automatic drive-away locking.

These features, together with low repair costs (thanks to careful design and a bolt-on front end) give the XJ LWB very competitive insurance ratings. It ranges between groups 15E and 19E, depending on market – a best-in-class advantage.

This New XJ Long Wheelbase offers additional space, luxury and convenience without compromising style, driving pleasure or ownership costs.

THE NEW XJ LONG WHEELBASE IN DETAIL

The New XJ Long Wheelbase (LWB) is the natural alternative for the Jaguar driver who admires the looks and driver-focused dynamics of the standard wheelbase XJ saloon, but prefers the additional rear seat room and, possibly, the versatility of being able to use the back seats as a travelling office or meeting room. And all of this without compro-mising the XJ‘s core advantages over the competition...

The XJ's long wheelbase heritage. . .

There have been long wheelbase versions of many XJ generations, starting with the original XJ, in 1972. When the Series 2 arrived in 1973, a long wheelbase version was available from the outset – indeed, a year later, in 1974, it became the standard car when the shorter wheelbase models were discontinued.

The next long wheelbase model came in 1993 as part of the XJ40 range (there were no extended versions of the Series 3). In recent years the sales volumes of long wheelbase cars have been increasing: the previous XJ8 LWB reached nearly 40,000 sales between 1997 and the end of production in 2002.

Things have moved on such that the wheelbase of the standard car – the most technically sophisticated XJ saloon ever and the model on which the New XJ LWB is based – is actually longer than the previous long wheelbase model‘s. And now an even longer version of this innovative saloon joins Jaguar‘s flagship range.

. . . and the new generation of Jaguar technology

The standard wheelbase version of the all-new, seventh-generation XJ saloon broke new ground when it went on sale in 2003. Winning a host of media awards, the new generation is unmistakably a Jaguar XJ, its elegant, purposeful appearance synonymous with both luxury and effortless sporting performance.

New design and body fabrication led to the development and implementation of ground-breaking construction methods for Jaguar‘s flagship saloon and the establishment of a lightweight vehicle strategy. In this all-new XJ generation, for the first time ever, the complete body structure of the car is manufactured from aluminium. This brings remarkably low vehicle weight and benefits subjective areas such as ride comfort, handling agility and steering feel – all of which are core elements in the defining character of any Jaguar.

Aluminium is notable for its high strength and low weight, but it isn‘t a new material. From its earliest days as a car manufacturer, Jaguar has used many forms of light alloy in its vehicles and components. In the XJ, however, Jaguar uses it in an innovative way. Unlike other aluminium-bodied cars, which typically use unstressed outer panels over a separate chassis, the XJ‘s bodyshell uses conventional, stressed skin, monocoque construc-tion. By employing advanced assembly techniques from the aerospace industry, including adhesive bonding and self-piercing rivets, the XJ uses lightweight aluminium, rather than steel, as its principal body material. In effect, riveting is used in a similar way to spot welding on a steel bodyshell,
and adhesive bonding is used in a similar way to seam

With this lightweight monocoque construction, any new XJ saloon is some 200kg (441lb) lighter than the equivalent model from the previous generation, and also significantly stronger. This has a very beneficial effect on power-to-weight ratio – a major factor in almost all aspects of vehicle performance. Reducing a vehicle‘s weight without compromising its strength will improve its performance for the same power output. That not only means faster acceleration, but also, because the engine has to work less hard, better fuel consumption and emissions levels. Lower weight also improves braking performance and reduces the energy involved in an impact, however minor.

Repair costs in the event of accident damage are minimised thanks to Jaguar‘s unique body construction method. The deformable aluminium front structure can withstand an impact of up to 10mph (16kph) without transferring damage to the main shell. It is bolted on, so that it can be replaced more quickly and easily if needed. Front wings, as well as boot and bonnet lids, are bolted on, and the doors feature lift-off hinges – again for easier, more economical replacement. Injection-moulded front and rear bumpers also protect the shell. All this helps the XJ achieve best-in-class insurance ratings – from 15E to 19E, depending on market.

The effects and benefits of the extensive use of aluminium are even more evident in a larger car such as the New XJ Long Wheelbase, with customers gaining in every respect.

Space to work, or room to relax

To add the required extra space and equipment to
the new long wheelbase model while retaining the dynamic character, style and everyday drivability of the standard XJ, the wheelbase has increased by 125mm (5 inches) to 3159mm (124.4 inches) and overall length by the same amount, to 5215mm (205.3 inches). That makes the New XJ Long Wheelbase the longest car in its premium saloon class – 55mm (2.2 inches) longer than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and 46mm (1.8 inches) longer than the longest BMW 7 Series – yet still attractively compact. All the additional body length is incorporated behind the B-pillars, increasing rear seating room without disrupting the XJ‘s elegant proportions.

The change from the SWB to LWB was cleverly engineered: only 17 body parts (including the large side pressings, new doors and longer roof) are new to the XJ Long Wheelbase, which is built on the same assembly line as the standard wheelbase model. And in standard form, the new XJ is some 200kg (441lb) lighter than the previous generation XJ and around 100kg (221lb) lighter than its nearest rivals. Most significantly, the New XJ LWB retains its exceptional bodyshell stiffness and, thanks to careful weight management in bodyshell and other areas, is just 24kg (53lb) heavier. That‘s an impressive 20 per cent better than Jaguar‘s original maximum weight-gain target and makes it the lightest long wheelbase in its class.

“The New XJ Long Wheelbase is a tremendously attractive proposition for buyers seeking a luxurious premium F–segment saloon with a real sporting edge.“
Gerry Penrose, Manager, XJ Product Planning

As well as fully class-competitive front legroom, the increased rear passenger space gives the XJ LWB an outstanding 999mm (more than 39 inches) of rear legroom – without compromising the generous
470-litre boot volume.

Added space allows a choice of rear seating options. The standard layout is a full-width, three-passenger bench seat. Alternatively there is a three-passenger electric bench seat with powered four-way lumbar adjustment, powered seat recline and head restraint. An additional feature is the ability to move the front passenger seat forwards by controls from the rear seat, for even more legroom. Also for comfort, rear seat passengers may have individual controls for the four-zone, climate-control air-conditioning system, with the option of voice control.

The rear seats of the New XJ Long Wheelbase are not only spacious and cThe rear seats of the New XJ Long Wheelbase are not only spacious and comfortable, but can also be a convenient place to work while on the move. Burr walnut-finished Business Trays fold down from
the front seat-backs - an ideal place to read or write, and big enough for a notebook computer, which can be powered from an auxiliary socket. Built-in connectivity for front and rear passengers to share telephone conference calls and, for work or relaxation, the XJ LWB offers multi-media connectivity for iPod, MP3 player and DVD players, digital memory media, Playstation or Gameboy systems – with the option of 6.5-inch displays in the backs of the front-seat headrests – and independent input points for two rear-seat passengers..

The front seats in the new long wheelbase version have multi-directional powered adjustment, heating and memory function as standard, and the driving position can be fine-tuned by reach – and rake-adjustable steering wheel and electrically adjustable pedals.

New options, for the personalised XJ

New interior trim and equipment options further differentiate the New XJ Long Wheelbase. A number of leather upholstery choices, including soft grain leather, are available, as well as an extended range of trim colours carefully co-ordinated with the body colours.

Storage space in the passenger cabin is generous and versatile and includes a large glovebox with one-touch release offset towards the driver. As well as interior light and sunroof controls, the overhead console can incorporate the switches for optional features such as remote garage door opening and rear sunblinds, and microphones for the built-in hands-free telephone and JaguarVoice systems. Jaguar is a leader in voice-control technology, which can be used in the LWB to operate telephone, audio,
air-conditioning and satellite navigation functions, in several languages.

Jaguar has embraced and developed many new technologies, but is careful to adopt them only when they are relevant and easy to use. Even without the JaguarVoice option, the XJ‘s DVD-based navigation system is a good example of that philosophy. It uses a large, clear, touch-sensitive screen, with logical menus and commands, including rapid destination input by postcode (where a suitable postcode network exists). The satellite navigation system can display points of interest, restaurants, hotels, car parks, Jaguar dealers and filling stations – the latter automatically highlighted when the fuel level is low. Touch-screen control also extends to the major audio and climate-control functions.

“Whether you need to work or relax on the move, the rear seat of the New XJ Long Wheelbase is a great place to be. It is spacious and luxurious, and features a number of multi-media options, LCD screens which can be incorporated into the front-seat headrests and fold-down Business Trays.“
Martin Runnacles, Director, Global Marketing

Externally, the New XJ Long Wheelbase echoes the latest enhancements to the standard wheelbase. Depending on model, that means a choice of chrome or new body-coloured grille surrounds with either chrome grid or chrome mesh inserts – the latter distinguishing the supercharged 4.2 V8 models. The standard alloy wheel diameter is now 18 rather than 17 inches, emphasising the XJ‘s dynamic character. There is a choice of 18-inch wheel styles and, depending on model, 19 – or 20-inch sizes.

New trim and equipment combinations, including a Soft Grain Leather Pack, allow the personalisation of the XJ. Functional equipment includes Park Assist and Cruise Control – with the option of Adaptive Cruise Control, using radar sensors to automatically maintain a safe distance from traffic ahead. The XJ LWB features Jaguar‘s electronic parking brake, with one-touch on and off control, and automatic application and release when the ignition key is removed, or when the transmission is moved to Drive.

The power to support the luxury

The New XJ Long Wheelbase offers a choice of three versions of Jaguar‘s compact, lightweight, all-alloy AJ-V8 petrol engines – naturally aspirated 3.5 and 4.2 litre and the range-topping supercharged 4.2 litre (dependent on market).

All three engines share similar construction, with aluminium blocks and cylinder heads, designed for high strength, long durability and minimum transmitted noise and vibration. All use chain-driven overhead camshafts with low noise, fine pitch, inverted tooth chains and sprockets. Variable Camshaft Phasing continuously varies the phasing of the inlet camshaft according to demand, to optimise low-speed torque and high-speed power, while reducing emissions. High compression ratios and multi-hole injection nozzles assist combustion, improving economy and further reducing emissions. Short engine and catalyst warm-up times make further gains.

The 3.5 litre V8 produces a maximum of 262bhp (196kW) DIN at 6000rpm, and 254lb ft (345Nm) DIN peak torque at 4250rpm, with an excellent mid-range torque spread.

The naturally aspirated version of the 4.2 litre V8 (with a longer stroke than the 3.5 litre version) produces 300bhp (224kW) DIN at 6000rpm, again with impressive mid-range flexibility, and with a torque peak of 310lb ft (420Nm) DIN at 4100rpm.

The supercharged 4.2 litre V8 uses an Eaton supercharger, twin high-efficiency intercoolers, a twin-pump fuel system and forged oil cooled
pistons to handle the increased internal loads and temperatures without compromising durability. The supercharged engine produces 33 per cent more power than its naturally aspirated equivalent – a very strong 400bhp (298kW) DIN at 6100rpm, and an even more robust torque peak of 408lb ft (553Nm) DIN at only 3500rpm. What‘s more, an exceptional torque spread delivers at least 86 per cent of peak torque across a wide range, from 2000rpm to well beyond the 3500rpm peak point.

All three engines are partnered by the stepped six-speed ZF automatic transmission that was first-in-class when it made its debut in the S-TYPE in 2002.

This light, compact unit is perfectly matched to the V8 family‘s power characteristics, and is also a major contributor to the XJ‘s refinement. The transmission features an electro-hydraulic shift mechanism whose adaptive shift strategy - controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU) – responds both to road conditions and to the way the car is being driven, to give the most fluent shifts and optimum performance. The latest version of Jaguar‘s J Gate selector has a very smooth shift action and the transmission requires minimum maintenance.

Involving driving dynamics - the XJ way

A key requirement in engineering the New XJ Long Wheelbase was that it should retain the SWB XJ‘s ideal balance between ride and handling dynamics. As with the standard wheelbase car, all long wheelbase models feature air suspension, Jaguar‘s Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) and anti-roll bars front and rear – all designed to provide optimum comfort and control. Double wishbone suspension front and rear, with lightweight alloy components to reduce unsprung weight, reinforces the XJ‘s sporting credentials. Isolated subframes, with rubber and hydraulic bushes, give precise control with maximum noise and vibration suppression. Pressurised air springs are used rather than conventional steel coils, to give ample travel while optimising the balance between comfort and control. Effective spring stiffness increases with load, to give a consistent ride, and ride height is automatically controlled according to the data supplied by three height sensors. At motorway cruising speeds, ride height is automatically lowered by 15mm (0.6 inches) to enhance stability, minimise aerodynamic drag and maximise fuel economy.

“Our aim was to make the driving experience of the New XJ Long Wheelbase similar to that of the standard wheelbase car – with the same feeling of dynamic agility and outstanding performance.“
Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity

CATS is Jaguar‘s industry-leading electronic suspension control system, which uses adaptive damping to provide the XJ LWB with the blend of driving dynamics, comfort and refinement that is a Jaguar hallmark. CATS continuously adjusts damping characteristics to suit driving conditions, optimising both ride and handling. A series of sensors provide information to the ECU, which is mapped to deliver the best solution to dampers that can switch between firm and soft settings within milliseconds. The system is standard on every XJ, including all long wheelbase models, and the combination of CATS, the double wishbone layout and air springs ensures the classic Jaguar balance of agile handling, outstanding ride comfort and fine steering feel.

The New XJ Long Wheelbase uses the same speed-sensitive ZF Servotronic power-assisted steering system as the standard wheelbase XJ, specifically calibrated for the revised suspension settings, and for each different engine option.

The naturally aspirated V8 models have ventilated 320mm (12.6 inch) front and 288mm (11.3 inch) rear discs with floating aluminium calipers. The supercharged V8 uses the high-performance XJR‘s uprated brake layout, developed with Brembo® ventilated 365mm (14.4 inch) front discs with four-piston, aluminium monobloc calipers, and solid 330mm (13.0 inch) rear discs with two-piece, four-piston calipers. All versions have four-channel anti-lock (ABS) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

The ABS system also contributes to the long wheelbase version‘s standard Traction Control (TCS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems. Traction Control counteracts wheelspin when too much power is applied on a low-grip surface, using engine torque control and selective rear wheel braking via the ABS system. DSC uses engine torque control plus selective braking on all four wheels to counteract either understeer or oversteer if the limits of adhesion are overstepped.

A.R.T.S. - Jaguar's sophisticated safety net

Building on the solid active safety foundations of excellent handling, roadholding, braking and stability, the New XJ Long Wheelbase is equipped with Jaguar‘s Adaptive Restraint Technology System (A.R.T.S.). Originally introduced on XK sports cars in 2001 and added to S-TYPE saloons in 2002, A.R.T.S. employs the world‘s most comprehensive and sophisticated sensing technologies to monitor the position of the front passenger, while other sensors detect the passenger‘s weight, the position of the driver in relation to the steering wheel and the usage – or not – of seat belts.

A.R.T.S. has the capability to sense the severity of a collision and deploy the vehicle‘s passive safety systems according to the type and magnitude of the impact. As a result, the system optimises restraint protection for vehicle occupants, reducing the risk of airbag-induced injuries. A.R.T.S. also serves to limit unnecessary passenger airbag deployments, thereby reducing the cost of accident repairs.

Safety equipment also includes frontal airbags in the driver and front passenger seat bolsters, side air curtains all round, ISOFIX rear child seat attachment points, a telescoping steering column, and Beltminder – an audible reminder, backed up by a warning lamp, if seat belts haven‘t been fastened at speeds above 10mph (16kph).

In line with Jaguar‘s long-standing commitment to providing
state-of-the-art security systems, the New XJ Long Wheelbase is comprehensively equipped to provide protection against theft of and from the vehicle. The security systems exceed the stringent British industry’s criteria for vehicle security.

The long wheelbase model‘s security systems are controlled by the multiplexed body electrical system. Integration of the security system with
the vehicle electronics and engine management make it extremely difficult for a thief to enter or steal the car. The sophisticated engine immobilisation system is integral to the engine management system, shutting down all fuelling, ignition and cranking functions.

“Introducing a long wheelbase version of the New XJ is a natural step for Jaguar. We‘ve enjoyed considerable success with long wheelbase models in the past and I believe this all-new car will be even more popular because the standard XJ scores so highly on quality, reliability, intelligent use of technology and driving excellence.“
Mike Wright, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

When the New XJ Long Wheelbase is available this autumn, it will give Jaguar customers – and owners of rival products – the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of the standard wheelbase XJ model but with the additional advantages of increased interior space and improved specification.

Equally appealing whether you‘re at the wheel or relaxing in the rear seat, the New XJ Long Wheelbase adds a new dimension to the XJ range.
