Chicago sued South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia—which is owned by Hyundai but operates mostly independently—over their failure to install anti-theft technology in multiple models of their cars, something the city alleges is behind a steep rise in vehicle thefts and other crime in Chicago.
The lawsuit noted that engine immobilizers, a security technology that requires a key with a special chip to send an encrypted signal to start the car, are standard in most U.S.-sold cars, but are absent in many Kia and Hyundai cars sold in the U.S.
