You just don’t mess with a winning formula on a whim. If, like BMW, you have a history of building stylish convertibles it takes a lot of nerve and good reason to change the recipe.
But even BMW couldn’t afford to ignore progress, so the new fourth generation 3-Series Convertible gets a folding hard top. Okay, the idea of a folding metal roof may seem old hat now, but BMW’s direct rivals still use a fabric top for a very good reason. Cloth tops pack down tightly, leaving more space in the Mercedes CLK and Audi A4 Cabriolet for passengers and their luggage. Has BMW managed to crack the problem as well as Volvo has in the C70, let alone matching up to its German adversaries?
