Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro has revealed that the automaker has established a rotary engine development department that will begin operating in February.

The announcement was made at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, alongside other exciting developments from Mazda. While the rotary engine is closely associated with performance cars (think RX-7, RX-8), the Hiroshima-based brand hopes it can be used as a medium for carbon-neutral motoring. The CEO said the new department will "make breakthroughs in the challenges of the carbon-neutral era."

Moro promised that Mazda would push the limits of engineering by using a "wide range of technical resources" that would give birth to cutting-edge internal combustion engine technology. Like Toyota, which has invested heavily in hydrogen-powered combustion engines, Mazda is looking at eco-friendly alternatives to EVs.
