 Regarding “Column: Automakers ignore human cost in quest to overturn California air pollution rules,” autonews.com, May 14: Jerry Hirsch is right. Automakers did call California’s Advanced Clean Cars II program — adopted by 11 states and Washington, D.C., and requiring escalating electric vehicle sales requirements over the next decade — “an unaccountable, unachievable regulatory wormhole.”

 
The question is why?
 
Yes, California (with permission from the EPA) sets its own emissions rules that reflect its particular circumstances — geography, air quality and charging infrastructure.
