It's a bittersweet day in Dearborn.
Today is the last day at work for thousands of Ford Motor Co. salaried workers who selected a buyout as part of the automaker's restructuring plan.
The company began offering buyouts to salaried workers last fall in an effort to trim 10,000 jobs. Employees had until Feb. 19 to sign up, and Ford isn't saying exactly how many opted for severance packages. But it's clear that a seismic shift today will take place throughout Ford's plants, labs and office buildings.
Meanwhile, bars and restaurants frequented by Ford workers are bustling today with retirement parties and good-bye get-togethers.
Dozens of employees gathered at Andiamo Dearborn just west of Ford's world headquarters.
Some tables were celebratory, others had more of a somber mood as diners bid farewell to many of their colleagues.
