Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are popping up on roadsides everywhere, logging the movements of everyday drivers under the banner of public safety. However, a massive anti-surveillance backlash is currently sweeping across the United States, and citizens are taking drastic measures to blind the cameras.
In one Minnesota city, vigilantes bypassed spray paint entirely and simply sawed down the police department’s entire fleet of tracking cameras.
According to a press release issued by the Winona Police Department, officers realized on August 1st that their surveillance network had suddenly gone dark. After an officer noted there had been “no recent activity” from the city’s network of Flock cameras, the department dispatched units to check the four highway locations where the hardware was installed.
