BMW’s new G50 3 Series proves the brand is not ready to abandon petrol. In CAR magazine’s first-look video, presenter James Dennison walks around the entry-level 2.0-litre model and explains why this car matters even as the all-electric i3 arrives.

From the outside the two cars look almost identical: the same Neue Klasse “2.5-box” silhouette, slim headlights, and bold kidney grille. Underneath they are completely different. The i3 rides on BMW’s new electric architecture. The G50 stays on an evolved CLAR platform with a conventional engine bay, different crash structure, and traditional drivetrain packaging. Small visual clues—grille texture, badging, and cooling openings—help tell them apart.

Inside, the cabin follows the same modern language as the i3. A large 17.9-inch central display replaces the previous dual-screen layout. The steering wheel uses floating haptic spokes, and seat controls have moved to the doors. Materials still feel premium, with options ranging from synthetic fabrics to Merino leather.

Power starts with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. Higher in the range sits the M350 xDrive, a 3.0-litre straight-six producing around 443 hp and 580 Nm. It reaches 62 mph in 4.1 seconds through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Chassis updates include a longer wheelbase, wider tracks, and revised suspension aimed at sharper body control without sacrificing ride quality.

Trim levels follow familiar BMW patterns, and a full M3 is expected later. For now the G50 shows BMW’s two-track strategy: electric for the future, petrol for buyers who still want a combustion 3 Series. The result is a car that looks like the new era but still delivers the driving character that made the nameplate famous.
