The National Society for Road Safety says many environmentally-friendly cars that qualify for Swedish government subsidies, are unsafe.

Of the 37 ’green’ car types the society crash-tested, 18 failed to meet recommended safety standards.

The president of the society, Björn Eriksson, and Anders Sundström, CEO of insurance company Folksam, are calling for all new cars to be fitted with a range of safety devices, including seatbelt reminders and effective whiplash protection.
