Mercedes-Benz has remade its dreadful M-Class midsize SUV into something that looks vaguely similar but otherwise is wholly different.
The 2006 M is bigger and more expensive than its predecessor. It is now of car-style unibody construction instead of the predecessor's trucklike body-on-frame layout. It offers no set of low-range gears for serious off-roading as the previous model did (though it provides a downhill mode to keep descents down to a few miles per hour). It rides more comfortably on pavement; steers, stops and turns better than before.
