Volkswagen is set to launch its “economy range” based on a new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine. The range, which includes a BlueMotion variant, follows the launch of the standard sixth generation Golf and the GTI and GTD performance models.

While the new Golf models with this engine and five-speed manual gearbox have C02 emissions of under 120 g/km, the Golf BlueMotion emits just 107 g/km of CO2. The Golf BlueMotion gets to this by achieving 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle, equating to a range of more than 800 miles. It is said to be the most efficient and technologically advanced iteration of the model yet produced.
