Toyota says the perfect FJ Cruiser buyer is a beer-drinking, off-road enthusiast who spends an inordinate amount of time in his garage modifying his rig. This thirty-something likes to shop at Sears and Wal-Mart. And there's one thing he hates: Gatorade. But, in a pinch, he will drink water.

Toyota is equally clear about which competitors it has in the crosshairs as it launches this retro SUV inspired by a 40-year-old vehicle, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. They are the Hummer H3, the Nissan Xterra and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Expect the new five-passenger FJ Cruiser, which goes on sale in late March as a 2007 model, to shake up the long-time players and the status quo in this cutthroat segment.
