Toyota Motor Corp.’s SAI full-hybrid sedan goes on sale in Japan on Dec. 7 but already, about 14,000 orders have been received for the model. To put it in perspective, this high demand is about five times Toyota’s monthly sales target of 3,000 units for the car. US customers will probably be able to recognize the sedan as the Lexus HS250h.

Toyota said that the SAI, which shares its underpinning with the Europe-made Avensis mid-sized car, has a high-end car’s fuel economy that’s comparable to a compact car.
