The more I stroll the auto show halls and watch people's reactions to the showcars, the more I believe their tastes are changing like no other time in automotive history.

After watching people drool over the Audi R8 and BMW Vision Concept this week at the LA Auto Show and overhearing so many people say they thought the iconic Porsche 911 was looking too old fashioned for their tastes, I realized that maybe it's time for Porsche to hedge their bets.

In my informal travels talking to young and old about their favorite sportscars, it's inevitable that MOST 911 lovers are over 40.

And the under 40 crowd prefers the 'wedge' shapes of the R8, Vision, Lambo, Ferrari, etc.

And since R8/Lambo platform exists now within the family, wouldn't it be smart for Porsche utilize it to hedge their bets and offer customers a choice IN CASE people eventually really tire of the 911 look?

My internal VW/Audi/Porsche moles tell me that Porsche was PISSED that the R8 ever made it to market because of the potential threat.

What are YOUR thoughts on an R8 style sports car from Porsche priced competitively against it?

Smart strategy or too risky?
