Just a mile or so from the BMW factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is a production plant of the giant Michelin tyre company. It makes only truck tyres, which is surprising because there's a constant demand for high performance car rubber from the boys up the road. Apart from the four million tyres - plus spares - fitted to the one million vehicles which have rolled off the production line since the plant opened in 1994, BMW's Performance Centre, across Highway 101 from the main plant, goes through a disproportionate number of tyres itself.
