We've driven the hot rod, so let's take the calm cruiser for a spin. It seems strange to write that about a vehicle some might consider a minivan, others an SUV, and still others a station wagon.

Yet the 2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class cars -- the R500 and the R350 -- defy easy categorization.

The fronts are low and ground-sucking, much like a sedan. The windshields rise back sharply, not giving in to the boxy effect that a minivan might impose. The rooflines, while providing ample interior headroom, look low and sleek from outside.

And both models of the R-Class come with full-time all-wheel drive, making them stable in wet weather and surefooted crawlers even in several inches of snow.
