whistlestop trip to Arizona allowed NZ Autocar's Peter Louisson some time at the wheel of Audi's first-ever SUV, the Q7. Not only is this a generously proportioned seven-seater but it features technology of which 'Q' of Bond fame would be proud.

It's surprising that Audi, the inventor of the quattro all-wheel-drive system, has taken this long to build an SUV. The fact the company finally decided to join the SUV set would seem to be an admission that the allroad wasn't quite doing the business.

Drive a day in the US, and you can't help but notice that pickup trucks and SUVs predominate. And large utilitarian vehicles make sense for conveying people or products in bulk. In the end, Audi probably felt it couldn't afford not to be in the sector, so the Q7 was born.
