The loss of rank and file members by the UAW has also put the union’s finances under stress, forcing the UAW to reduce its staff, according to a report distributed to delegates attending the union’s 35th Constitutional Convention in Detroit.

“We can no longer operate with the level of staff and physical infrastructure that we maintained when we had upward of 700,000 members, as we did a decade ago,” UAW President Ron Gettelfinger wrote in the report, which was provided to about 1,200 delegates on Sunday and Monday.

This year, the UAW cut its UAW International staff by 130 through attrition and an early retirement incentive this year and now has a total staff of about 325 at its headquarters on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.
