After releasing its latest new product, the 9-5, Saab is coming back with something a bit more substantial; a luxury sport-ute.

The long on/off again project has finally begun to take shape after being switched off during Saab's more shaky history. And, from what we can see, which isn't saying much, it appears that it is going to create one stiff cocktail. You know, the kind that contorts your face upon the first slug.

Bearing a clamshell roofline, sweeping headlights and an A-pillar reminiscent of the big-daddy 9-5, it is clear that there is a recurring design language. It seems that Saab has decided to find some brand identity and break free from reckless rebadging. Although we hope that the General Motors' steering wheel gets the ol' heave-ho in the testing process.

One intriguing aspect of the vehicle I noticed, however. It seems to have a similar look to Audi's Q5. Anyone else catching that? Take note of its silhouette.

It’s been a long time coming, but the SAAB 9-4X has finally been signed off and production of the Volvo XC90-sized SUV has begun at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.

The car was originally previewed at the Detroit Auto Show at the beginning of 2008, and was slated to arrive in late 2009. However, the uncertainty surrounding the Swedish brand’s future has delayed the project until now.
