As early as 2013, Mazda is expected to introduce a turbocharged successor to the RX-7. Insiders say that the new RX-7, which is likely to be named RX-9, will keep the rotary Renesis technology used by its predecessors and the RX-8.

Notably, production of the RX-8, which has unimpressive torque and poor fuel economy, will end next month. However, Mazda is currently examining several radical options that would make the powerplant generate better economy and would provide torque that’s needed to keep pace with competitors such as the VW Scirocco.
