The Nissan Leaf is one of the few electric cars that has people talking. And, its not because it has a press release issued on the littlest changes or gimmicks. We're talking to you, Chevrolet.

It is because the Leaf kind of came from no where AND it happened to take over Steve Jobs' presentation on the new iPhone last month.

Well, played Nissan.

But there is one problem the company has been presented with. Although it will likely never admit the Volt's recently announced eight year, 100,000 mile warranty gives them the willies, it recently sent out surveys to consumers who either reserved a Leaf of were merely hand wavers. The topic: warranties.

Keeping this in mind, does Nissan need to MATCH or BEAT the Volt's warranty in order to triumph over General Motors and its electric vehicle?

On the basis of a consumer survey it sent out last week, Nissan may be feeling the pressure to match the recent surprise announcement that the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid will come with an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty.

According to Katherine Zachary, a Nissan spokeswoman, the company’s survey went to 16,000 holders of $99 Leaf reservations in the United States, as well as a sampling of “hand wavers” who have expressed interest in the car.

The multiple-choice survey was detailed, and it asked some pointed questions about the battery warranty. After pointing out varying coverage on the Honda Civic (five years, 60,000 miles on the power train), Toyota Prius (eight years, 100,000 miles on the hybrid components) and the Volt, it asks, “If Nissan announced the standard warranty for the Nissan Leaf battery was five years/60,000 miles, to what degree would you seriously consider purchasing or leasing the Nissan Leaf as your next vehicle...
