Nissan's 2011 Juke is mutt-ugly: The homely hound you adopt because it exudes quirkiness, promises friskiness and suggests an engaging personality. And it is just so.

Juke behaved just as expected. It was fast, fun and — despite an alarming level of annoyances — easy to embrace.

Juke is spanking new to the U.S. Other than the Suzuki SX4 crossover, it's not really like any other small car. Nissan hopes it'll appeal to the types who might otherwise buy a Mazda3, Scion tC, Mini Cooper or to "the guys driving around 3-year-old BMW 3 Series," says Larry Dominique, Nissan North America vice president in charge of product planning.
