Hyundai boasts about being the automaker that is setting the trajectory for fuel economy across the auto industry. The Korean company is promising an eye-popping 50 miles-per-gallon Corporate Average Fleet Economy by 2025.

It's already making headway.

The most recent numbers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show Hyundai leading fuel economy in the large car class: its Sonata gets 32 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city. Preliminary data for 2011 from the Department of Energy give the Sonata an even higher rating of 35 miles per gallon.
