Volkswagen has confirmed that its Up city car due next year will not be using two-cylinder engines, says Autocar. VW has been the leader of engine downsizing technology with its three-cylinder petrol and diesel motors. However, R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg estimates that even with the recent introduction of Fiat’s new two-cylinder TwinAir engine, downsizing is nearing its limits.
