After they sold yesterday first Volt with $225,000, today, Chevrolet has begun shipping retail customer Volts from its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
GM said it would ship 350 Volts this week to California, Texas, New York and Washington, D.C., which means its volume will quickly exceed that of the Leaf. Is GM crowing about its volume advantage? Of course!

“Today is a historic milestone for Chevrolet,” said Tony DiSalle, Volt marketing director. “We have redefined automotive transportation with the Volt, and soon the first customers will be able to experience gas-free commuting with the freedom to take an extended trip whenever or wherever they want.”

The Volt price is set at $40,280, without the destination fees. However, buyers are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, which should help offset the sting of the Volt’s price.
