If you haven't been hiding under a rock since the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, I think it is safe to say that you should know by now that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt won the North American Car of the Year.
Most people embraced the new kind of hybrid that created a stir. Even Agent 001 was impressed with the Volt after having the chance to drive it. There's a reason for that: it is the first electric vehicle that's usable without the hassle of range anxiety. You can't really beat that.
For a technological innovation, it's pretty much a 10 on a 10-point basis.
But not everyone agrees. In fact, a Korean publication is calling the North American Car of the Year bullbird. Their reason? Apparently, sales should be a concern.
I guess they didn't get the memo that the Volt just reached dealers.
Is the Korean paper onto something or is this just a bias, pro-Korea paper that is bitter about the Sonata's loss?
"The naming of the Chevrolet Volt as the North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show last week is sparking some controversy,” reports the Chosun Ilbo from Korea. “The main reason for the skepticism is that the Volt has sold only some 300 units since its launch a month ago. It is the first time that a car with such limited sales has won the award.”
The real sales could be less. “A GM source at the motor show admitted that the Volt’s sales were refigured at the last minute for the award,” writes the paper. What really bothers them: ”Hyundai’s new Sonata, one of the finalists for this year’s award, has sold some 202,000 cars in the U.S. and Canada...
