The Detroit Three automakers, their suppliers and other Michigan businesses are planning to expand their workforces -- some by the thousands -- this year.

But many of those engineering, design or finance jobs will go to contract workers, as firms rely on more affordable, flexible labor while they feel out the strength of the economic recovery.

"There are probably more contract positions available now than permanent," said Ron Shahani, owner and president of a Livonia contract house, Acro Service.
